It was a Sunday afternoon, and I was chilling at home with my family when I got a call from a friend saying a website was down – upon investigation something had altered one of the index.php files and it was this that was causing the site not to load.
Upon further inspection i found out that the file in question had 2 lines of text added to the bottom of it, and my findings were not good.
After a scan of that websites account, we found a lot more infected files. Oh dear.
I did some searching, and NOTHING came up on Google. Now ive been “surfing the web” for 16 years, and i’ve NEVER been unsuccessful in finding what I want on google – so it must have been BRAND NEW!
A few days later and I managed to find a blog that was discussing the virus, and also talking about the different forms/variations it came in.
After much searching, editing of files, searching, editing of files, altering the search criteria, searching, editing files – we finally have gotten rid of this crap – but it was a long process!
We think the Trojan gains passwords from Filezilla and access the sites via ftp, edit all the javascript files, all the index.html, index.php, main.php and maintenance.php files to include some javascript redirect type code.
The overall “point” of the virus is unclear, we could do with some original virus files so we can rip them to pieces and analyse what its doing.
We do think its simply a redirect virus that will try and send you to a Viagra site or something – so its not the worst thing in the world.
It does however block users from viewing your website if they have found it thru google or if they have Virus/Malware/Spyware scanners running all the time on your pc.

It doesnt matter who you are, everyone wants to get whatever they are buying for the best price possible. This is definitly true for web design, and just like many other trades, you really do get what you pay for.
However, unlike many trades (painting cars springs to mind) if you buy a cheap website, it should work and appear cheap – it should simply have less features than the next package up.
We offer websites for £250 + vat – its our lowest priced package, and we basically ask the customer to supply content, images, a logo and some colour choices, and we take care of the rest.
So far we have done two of these sites for different customers and they have both been happy with the websites first time – so much so one has ordered another straight away.
Every website we do uses the wordrpess framework, and is totally scalable – so if these guys want to upgrade at a later date they can, and keep their existing content and page structure in place therefore retainninig all search engine entries

We’re always keeping our eyes on the competition, seeing where they are going and what they are doing/working on. I feel like its a close community around here, despite no 2 web development companies in Mansfield talking to each other.
From time to time we notice new players on the field, usually via Google Ads (the quickest way to be seen) and we always have a good look at them so we can try and find out if we know them, have worked with them – and should be worried!
I was in my email today, and i noticed a Google ad for a company that id never heard of before, so just clicked on the ad to see who they were, and noticed that they had spelt something wrong in the title of the advert.
My initial impressions were that they had just made a typo – easily done if they were doing their Adwords Campaign late at night! Then I started to think about other reasons for them making the mistake – maybe they had done it intentionally?
The way adwords works, is you pay a fee that is calculated based on how popular the keyword is you want to rank for – so the more popular, the more expensive. Maybe this company had spelt the main keyword wrong, in an attempt at getting the ads cheaper?
The more i thought about it, the more my opinion swayed towards them simply making a mistake when adding the adverts – as ive set a few campaigns up for people, and you choose the keywo0rds you wish to rank for on a separate page – and it doesn’t go on the ad content.
Also the ad appeared on my gmail – and im not the greatest at spelling but I know I didn’t spell design like that, anywhere on any emails!
