Back in October 2009, Google launched their ‘Social Search’ service, which provided the signed in searchers to view connections and news from their social media outlets such as Facebook, and now, the service has been stretched out over 19 more countries in an attempt to expand dominance in the search engine market, along with further challenging Facebook in the land of social networking.

This move follows news earlier this week that Google’s main competitor in the search market, Microsoft’s ’Bing’ had introduced a deeper integration with Facebook, allowing signed in users to view what their friends have viewed and liked on the search engines results pages.

This also comes following the revelations that Facebook ran a smear campaign against Google, dropping several malicious stories surrounding Google privacy issues – issues which were addressed by Google CEO Eric Schmidt yesterday.

Whether these new integrations with social networking and search will make a difference in the market share remains to be seen, however one thing is for sure, the battle is hotting up.

The EU has officially decided against imposing legislation against a ’2 speed’ internet, in a blow to net neutrality campaigners. Some ISP’s (internet service providers) have been pushing for a multiple tiered internet, which would see certain functions and websites take priority over others in the speed in which the data is delivered, and the content you want is displayed on your screen.

The EU commission made the decision not to impose further laws, ruling that media scrutiny and IS’s providing sufficient information to customers about their connection speeds would be enough to ensure the internet stays ‘Open and neutral’.

Internet service providers have argued that ‘traffic management’ and speed control are critical for keeping services such as voice call software Skype to keep running well, whilst counter arguments from opposer’s say that it will lead to net discrimination, with many suffering at the hands of severely slowed internet connections for ‘less authoritive’ websites.

Whilst it is doubtful that ISP’s would damage speeds dramatically – more for their own good than anything – the sound of a multi-tiered internet does sound like a bad idea to me personally, especially when SEO and CRO can be largely effected by loading speeds, and if it were to take to long for a website to load, they would potentially lose large amounts of traffic.

For more information regarding the internet, SEO or CRO, please call our friendly team on 01623 650333.

SEO guru and head of Google’s webspam team Matt Cutts has confirmed that shortened URL’s – very popular in the social media world – will not have any negative effects on SEO and anchor text links.

On a Google video, Cutts explained that most shortened url’s work just like regular 301 redirects – where the page rank, anchor text and overall ‘link juice’ is passed on to the final destination website.

Cutts said “If we try to crawl a page, and we see a 301 or permanent redirect, which pretty much all well-behaved URL shorteners will do, in general, there really shouldn’t be any harm to using custom URL shorteners in your SEO. The PageRank will flow through. The anchor text will flow through”. He also warned however that many Twitter links are ‘no follow’ and therefore will often not flow through the page rank.

Google openess to accept shorterned URLS for SEO purposes is no surprise since new CEO Larry Page has announced that the company needs to go more social, and a big focus is going to be put on it throughout the year – which started with the new ‘+1′ button to rival the facebook ‘like’ and may well end with a fully fledged Google social network.

After years of battles and disagreements, the internet overseer Icann have given final approval for a new top level domain to come into use.

The .xxx domain, which rather predictably will be used for adult and pornographic websites had faced competition in the past from conservative groups, however it has now been approved and will soon be rolled out across the many sites who have pre-resevered a domain – 110,000 last year alone.

It remains to be seen what effect this introduction will have on this ‘seedier’ yet extremely popular side of the internet, supporters of the domains introduction say it will make it easier for those looking for adult content to find, and those not wanting to see it to avoid, whilst religious groups say it ‘legitmises’ the content, and some pornographers say it will ‘ghettoise’ their websites.

As of yet we have not dealt with a site of that nature here at dijitul, however it could be interesting to see what effect this has on the internet in general, and how search engines such as Google come to view the .xxx domains from an SEO point of view.

For more information regarding domains and their effects, give the friendly SEO Nottingham team at dijitul a call on 01623 650333.

Search engine giant Google have unveiled the newest update to their search engine results, one which allows the user to further personalise their results and what they see.

Everyone has had the experience of searching for something, clicking a result only for it to be a poor, low quality site which seems to have no relevance whatsoever to your search, yet has still somehow made it onto the SERP.

However, this new update now sees the ability to block all pages from a specific website from showing up in any of your searches, meaning you can filter out the less useful or ‘spammy’ websites. Once you have clicked on a result, if you find it to be something you never wish to see again, you may simply click back to the results, where there will be an option to ‘block all results’ from that website.

This service is only available to people signed in to Google, however it could have a large impact on the SERP’s as Google look to shake things up again, and ensure that websites provide the best content possible.

For more information on Google, SEO, Web Design or anything internet related, give our friendly team a call on 01623 650333.

As experienced SEO’s who come face to face with different SEO challenges and tasks every day, we appreciate that it can sometimes be hard to get your head around numerous back links and keyword density figures, and for those who aren’t SEO specialists, it can be very easy to give up.

If keyword densities and back links aren’t your thing, then leave that to us, but even your very own specialist subject can be a fantastic help in trying to get up the SERP’s. If theres one thing that Google loves, its fresh content, if they see a website as being dormant and unused, they will assume that the content may be irrelevant or out of date, and the only place you will be going is down, however if it see’s regular, maybe even daily updates coming in, they will love it and you will be climbing in no time.

Regardless of your industry or specialist subject, theres always something you can write about, its always worth taking half an hour per day to look up some news and write some new content for your website – a blog is always a great tool to have.

If you are sceptical, we have first hand proof that this does work. Last year we did some work for an Alloy Wheel Wax brand known as ‘RimWax’, who sell only 2 products, the wax itself, and microfibre cleaning towels. Now wheel cleaning may not exactly sound like the sort of thing you can sit and write about 3, 4 even 5 times a week, however, through a carefully planned operation of adding a new blog post with a keyword link to the front page every morning, we got fantastic results.

Simply through finding something automotive or cleaning related, and in turn relating it to the keywords, we managed to get them to the top of Google for both ‘Rimwax’ and ‘Rim Wax’, along with 3rd for ‘Alloy Wheel Wax’, and a bunch of other page 1 ranking for key terms. Don’t believe us? Go search for yourself!

The main point of this though, is that this can be used for absolutely anything, no matter what you do, there is always going to be something you can relate, so get writing!

Its no secret that SEO is a long and drawn out process, full of glorious hits and demoralising misses, all leading to that worthwhile day when you see your website on page 1 of Google for your main keyword. The time it takes for the satisfying feel of a page 1 website however, can all depend on how many, and how big the ‘hits’ are when performing off site SEO, predominantly, link building.

When performing search engine optimisation, there are few more exciting moments than finding the high page rank, high authority domain, which has 100% relevance to your/your clients website, and many trusted links. So, you submit your link, or, email them asking for a link on their site , and then you wait…and wait.

More often then not however, if you simply go straight ‘in their face’ and start demanding links without offering anything in return, the reply you are waiting for will more than likely not come.

If this is the case, its time to work the charm offensive, with a few of, but not limited to, these options:

Offer them a service/content

Give them some advice

Go old school!

So, to break it down…option 1, if you feel you could provide the website in question with anything – dependant on your industry – in exchange for a link, it is always worth the effort. If you do not have anything you think your business could personally offer, then maybe offer to write some unique content for them or their blog. Even if they say no, they will respect the fact that you are willing to work for the link.

Another way to possibly gain a link is to spend some time closely reviewing their site, go through every link and every word, try to spot any potential mistakes. If you spot a spelling mistake, a broken link, a wrong page title, all of these things are worth raising with them, send them a short email simply pointing out the error. Once you have done this, you can cheekily bring up the topic of links, they are much more likely to respect and trust you if you have gone out of your way to give them some help.

Finally, ‘Going Old School’, no, we don’t mean challenge them to a game of space invaders or pong, we mean do something that is often un-thought of in the SEO/website world, use a pen and paper. Yes, pull out the stationery, and write a letter. If you are willing to take the time and handwrite a personal letter to them regarding it, not only are they guaranteed to read it, they’re going to take note of you.

In the complex world of SEO, none of these methods are guaranteed to work, or not work, but its all worth the effort to pull in those high quality links and get your website to the top of Google.

With Blekko still in relative obscurity and the Yahoo! search results now being powered by Microsoft’s Bing, there are only 2 main players in the search engine and SEO world, Google, and Microsoft.

There is no doubting that Google are, and for years have been, the dominant search force, pulling in over 70% of all searches in the US alone for January 2011. At the same time, Bing is beginning to come to prominence as the main competitor to Google, despite recieving a lot smaller search share.

However, tensions have recently risen between the 2 search engines, as senior Google figures have accused Bing of ‘cheating’ by simply using Googles search results as their own. Google have revealed their ‘proof’ of this by having websites appear for completely random unrelated search terms, such as ‘hiybbprqag’ and, lo and behold, these strange unsearchable terms began to provide the same results on Bing.

Bing have issued a statement where they neither fully admit to, or deny this, simply saying they use a range of methods to collect their search results, including users opting in to share their searching information.

Either way, on face value, Googles investigation seems to have exposed Bings underhanded tactics as they constantly strive to put a halt to the Google freight train of internet dominance.

At the end of the day however, Google are, and remain to be, the ‘masters’ of search, the phrase ‘Google It’ is so widely used now it would not be a shock to see it in the dictionary in the future. We concentrate heavily on Google at Dijitul as we constantly work to get our own and our clients websites as high up the SERP’s as possible, as we do with all search engines.

The web is such a big place these days that whatever your business, whether it be mainstream retail, or a small niche product, theres more than likely going to be people out there who like, or want, what you are offering.

With most products, come fans, and with fans, come ‘fan sites’. The internet is full of fan sites – unofficial sites set up by and for people who wish to discuss their love of a certain thing. Music, films, books, cars and hobbies to name just a few are popular with hundreds of sites set up to debate and rave about every aspect of them.

Now, when it comes to SEO, you may see these sites as more of a hindrance than a help, clogging up the SERPS for the search term which you wish to establish yourself for. However, these sites can work greatly to your advantage, they are simply a gold mine full of potential traffic and links.

Once you have found the right places, the possibilites are endless, introduce yourself, join the debates, advertise your website, and bring in those fans.

During the long process of performing SEO on a website, there are several hurdles which you have to overcome, some more difficult than others.

Whilst identifying keywords and correcting densities is a large part of SEO which can require many hours staring at your computer screen, the real long job begins when you have to interact with other web masters, other web users, other people. After all, there’s no point having such a fine website if its not going to receive any traffic, or at least in a position where it can do so.

After keyword density and computer skills have taken you as far as possible, its then time to get your name out there, get those much needed quality links which can be the difference between page 1 and page 2.

Its the big links, the high value link targets, which are going to have the biggest impact and will give you the best results, however, these will be the most difficult ones to gain. These more successful websites have already built up their trusted reputation, they do not need to exchange links, and moreover, they do not want to tarnish their image by linking to a website they do not feel can be trusted or is not useful to their users. So this means you will have to work extra hard to convince these websites that you are very trustworthy, useful and genuine.

One of the most basic pointers of trying to get strong links from successful websites is to forge a relationship, be it business, or social, if you let them know that you are a nice, trusted individual, maybe even have a friendship with them, they are much more likely to link to you, for being both trusted, and as a friendship favour.

You can try to strike up these friendships in many different ways, anything from a casual tweet regarding their website, and a few facebook messages, to face to face meetings and a whole range of other methods, everyone has their own tried and tested way.

Once the relationship has been forged and is solid, the possibilities are endless, whether it be a joint marketing campaign, or simply offering to add some content to their website – guest author spots on blogs are a fantastic way to get sure fire links.

This is barely scratching the surface of different tactics available to try and earn yourself new links and business relations. Some may fail, whilst many may work and revolutionise the success of your website, its all about trial and error.

We understand that some of this may seem quite daunting, but we are here to help, with all your internet marketing, web design and SEO needs and queries.
