Registration has officially opened for the chance to secure your website one of the brand new .xxx domain suffixes which go live next year.

The .xxx domain has been created with the intention of building a so called ‘red light district’ of the internet, where websites with adult content can all be, making it easier for those wanting it, to find it, and those not wanting to, to avoid it.

‘ICM registry’ who are overseeing the launch say that they hope the new domain will lead to a more ‘responsible approach to adult content’.

The .xxx domain will not be compulsory for adult websites and they will be allowed to decide for themselves whether or not they apply, however ICM have also that they will be working with security firm McAfee to ensure that none of the sites harbour malware or other cyber related threats, making them a much safer place for people to visit.

It is also possible for people and businesses to have their name blocked from being used with the .xxx domain, so as to avoid people trying to associate them with adult content – a free between $150 and $200 (£100-£200) has to be paid for this.

We don’t tend to deal with adult websites in our day to day activities here at Dijitul, however, with it being such a huge part of the internet, and formerly the biggest online pastime (only being displaced by the rise of Facebook and Twitter) a change of such proportions cannot be ignored, and could have quite an impact on the landscape of the internet.

Yahoo’s chief executive Carol Bartz has been fired from her position at the company after two and a half years in charge.

Back in 2009 Ms Bartz took over from one of the companies founders Jerry Yang, in an attempt to turn around its falling fortunes as it continually lost ground in the search industry to Google. However, despite her early job cuts to save money, and enhanced focus on providing personalised search resultds, the fortunes could not be turned, and she has been ‘removed from the board of directors, effective immediately’.

Chief financial office Tim Morse will take over temporarily whilst the board of directors work to find a full time replacement.

In my opinion, this change of captain is hardly surprising, despite partnerships with Bing and continued work to try and establish itself as a true competitor in the industry again, Yahoo! seem to have stagnated and made very little progress, whilst Facebook has emerged and revolutionised the way people spend their time online, and Google remain search leaders have developed their own highly popular mobile operating system, and become a competitor in the social media market.

However, whether or not the change will actually make any real impact remains to be see and turn their fortunes around remains to be seen, either way, something signifcant will need to be done to turn Yahoo! around.

Search engine, and now many other things, giant Google has closed 10 of its services in what has been described as a ‘Spring Clean’.

These discontinued services are to include social powered question and answer tool ‘Aardvark’, news content experiment ‘Fast Flip’ and note taking service ‘Notebook’.

This is being done so that Google can slim down their range of services, provide more simplicity for users, and to allow them to put more focus and resources into developing on its more popular services. A quote from senior vice president Alan Eustace on the official Google blog said :

“Over the next few months we’ll be shutting down a number of products and merging others into existing products as features. [...] This will make things much simpler for our users, improving the overall Google experience. It will also mean we can devote more resources to high impact products—the ones that improve the lives of billions of people.”

The full list of discontinued Google services is as follows -

Aardvaark

Fast Flip

Notebook

Desktop

Pack

Sidewiki

Google Maps API for Flash

Google Web Security

Image Labeller

Subscribed Links

It will be extremely interesting to see what Google pulls out of its sleeve with it having much more resources to spread over its existing and future projects, and will they be able to replicate themselves in having the next ‘Google’ moment.

New statistics have revealed that almost half of UK internet users are going online via their mobile phones.

The information, from the ‘Office For National Statistics’ showed that 45% of people use mobile browsing when out and about, an increase from the 31% who said they do so last year. The biggest increase was amongst young people, with 71% of 16-24 year old’s using mobile browsing, whilst the number of household internet connections also increase by 3%, with 77% of households in the UK now having an internet connection.

This increase is likely down to the continuing of smartphones which can easily browse the web from anywhere, and also the fact that the internet is becoming an increasingly large part of every day life – the 23% without an internet connection may say that they ‘don’t need the internet’ but it really is a big thing!

With these statistics just emphasising the amount of people online, both at home and on their mobile, if you have a business which is not available online, you are potentially missing out on a huge market, and in turn, lots of money!

For more information about getting your business online, or ensuring your website is mobile friendly, then please call the Web Design Nottingham team at Dijitul today on 01623 650333 today and see what we can do for you today.

Search giant Google have discovered a virus which apparently hijacks peoples searches and takes them to a website from which the cyber criminals behind the virus will make money for the traffic.

The reported virus has apparently made its way on to 1million computers worldwide, and according to Google security engineer Damian Menscher, the malware will have most likely found its way onto these computers through fake anti-virus software or ‘scareware’, telling people their computer is infected and they need to download it, but once installed, the hijacking virus then has control of the computer.

Google have plans to warn the people who are infected by providing them with a yellow banner at the top of their Google search results, informing them of the infection and encouraging them to remove it.

This is the latest in a line of fight backs from internet companies to counteract spammers and cyber criminals, Microsoft legally had the worlds biggest source of spam shut down, whilst Virgin Media and Talk Talk have also implemented systems to tell their broadband users when their computer is infected.

Over the past few months here at Dijitul we have been playing and experimenting with a new piece of eCommerce software to see how it can be used to further improve the online shops we can provide to our customers, and the online shopping experience they can offer to theirs – and the results are good, real good!

The software in question, OpenCart, is a fantastic eCommerce solution which provides fantastic usability and helps to create professional, functional online store. This software is open source, meaning that updates and bug fixes are constantly being developed, and unlike other eCommerce platforms such as osCommerce and Joomla, it has been tested vigorously to ensure that it is extremely safe and secure.

It is also a CMS (content management system) which means that you can add a page, product, or tweak pretty much anything on your website in seconds, wherever you are, on whatever device you please, be it a tablet PC on the train, a laptop at home or your mobile phone whilst in the queue for Mcdonalds!

A few more of the fantastic Opencart features are as follows -

Unlimited Categories

Unlimited Manufacturers

Unlimited Products

Multi Currency

Multi Language

Product Reviews

Support for 20+ Payment Gateways

Multiple Tax Rates

Search Engine Friendly

MANY more!

We really are amazed by the huge amount of features that this software boasts, especially for a FREE eCommerce solution, our OpenCart Design page on our websites lists 23 fantastic features, and even that doesn’t cover them all!

So, if you’re looking to take the next step and bring your business to the world of eCommerce, get in touch with the Dijitul team today on 01623 650333 and see what we can do for you, and in the meanwhile, check out this fantastic website we built using OpenCart, Tasty! Contour-HD Action Cameras

A recent report has confirmed exactly what we have known for a while now – spelling mistakes on eCommerce websites can be hugely costly.

Figures from the office for national statistics published last month showed that the UK internet economy is thriving, with sales averaging £527million per month, however it is thought that this could be many millions higher – if people didn’t make spelling mistakes on their websites!

It is thought that a customers average potential spend is halved when they are faced with spelling mistakes – and its hardly surprising, when you’re preparing to enter your bank card details on to the internet for someone to use, you’re more than likely going to be slightly put off by the legitimacy and quality of the company if it says ‘Add To Shoppping Kart’

Remember, when online shopping is done, a large majority of the process is done through the written word and a huge decider on whether or not the customer will follow the deal through with you, depends on what they can see and read, so always be sure to present your website as the highest quality possible – poor websites can lose you endless amounts of cash!

According to figures released by search engine giant Google, the British government is one of the most likely in the world to request information on peoples web usage.

The ‘Transparency Report’ listed 26 developed countries in order of how often their governments requested data. The USA had the most requests with 4,601, however when population size was taken in to consideration, they slipped to fifth and the UK which made 1,162 shot up to second.

The top 5 were as follows -

Singapore

UK

France

Australia

USA

Details were not released on the specific details requested, however it is thought that web search terms, emails and Youtube activity will be amongst it.

Information was also released on countries who made the most requests for content to be taken down from Google, where the UK’s 38 requests were significantly lower than Germany who made 118 requests, and Brazil who topped the chart with 263 requests.

Despite the British governments higher tendency to requests browsing information, this should not scare you away from the internet, as it is still a safe place to operate, and the best marketing tool available.

Online consumer groups have criticised proposals for websites which stream copyrighted material for free to be banned in the UK.

This follows last weeks meeting between communications minister Ed Vazey, internet service providers and copyright holders – which annoyed campaigners ‘The Open Rights Group’ as their request to attend the meeting was rejected.

Web blocking is seen as the most effective way for people to stop using illegal websites which stream copyrighted items such as football matches, music and films for free – an increasing problem.

Campaigners such as The Open Rights group however believe that it would be a restriction of free speech, and that more proportionate measures should be taken rather than blocking websites, such as better research and advertisement to find legal ways for people to find the service they are illegally obtaining.

Would better advertisement of legal services get people off of the free illegal option, or is simply banning websites the only way to get people go about it? Leave a comment voicing your opinion below, and be sure to check back on Monday for more internet and technology news from the web design Nottingham team.
